INTRODUCTION
Sexual assault refers to any sexual act or attempt to obtain a sexual act, or unwanted sexual comments or acts to traffic, that are directed against a person’s sexuality using coercion by anyone, regardless of their relationship to the victim, in any setting, including at home and at work.
CASE OVERVIEW
In this distressing case, a 16-year-old victim became the target of sexual assault. The incident occurred on 12th May 2020 when the victim’s mother went to collect cow dung from a field located west of their home. Due to her leg handicap, she called her daughter (the victim) to bring the cow dung home. While the victim was on her way carrying the cow dung in a basket on her head, her mother heard her cries for help. The victim’s voice led her mother to a place known as “balla par,” a three kattha land, where she found her daughter in distress. The victim recounted that the accused had grabbed her from behind and attempted to commit a forcible act by pushing her to the ground. Following the assault, both the victim and her mother proceeded to the residence of the other accused, where he assaulted the victim’s mother.
EVA-BLN INTERVENTION
As a result of the diligent efforts of the BLN, the Court acknowledged the validity of the claim and awarded the victim a significant compensation of 3,75,000 lakhs. This compensation aims to support the victim’s recovery and reaffirms society’s commitment to ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions. The BLN’s intervention plays a pivotal role in seeking justice for the victim and her family, while also highlighting the importance of combating such heinous crimes in society.
CONVICTION
The accused persons were convicted by the court. And the accused were punished with three years of jail term.
