Mira Devi, a Dalit woman, courageously sought justice after her daughter was subjected to grave sexual violence and immediately filed an FIR. In retaliation, the accused, supported by local villagers, tried to coerce her into withdrawing the case. When she refused, they orchestrated three false counter-cases against her—under the SC/ST Act, the Arms Act, and for causing hurt—aiming to intimidate and silence her. Instead of giving in, Mira stood firm, determined to continue her fight for justice despite the mounting pressure.

The Bihar Legal Network (BLN) intervened to counter this blatant misuse of legal provisions. Through administrative advocacy, BLN succeeded in getting two of the false cases dismissed, while the third was quashed through court proceedings. Mira’s case highlights both the courage of marginalized women in resisting social and legal backlash and the vital role of sustained legal aid in ensuring that the justice system cannot be weaponized against survivors.
